Aged 45 and Over?

According to the Canadian Diabetes Association you are at risk for diabetes and should be tested at least every three years. You could be one of many Canadians who have diabetes and don't know it. The Association encourages you and members of your family to take the following quiz.

Check the following survey. If you answer yes to just one of the questions, you should be tested for diabetes earlier and/or more often:
 
Do you have a parent, brother or sister with diabetes?
Are you overweight, especially if you carry most of your weight around your middle?
Are you a member of a high-risk group (Aboriginal peoples, Hispanic, Asian or African descent)?
Do you have high cholesterol or other fats in your blood?
Did you give birth to a baby that weighed over 4 kg (9 pounds) at birth, or did you have gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)?
Do you have high blood pressure?
Do you have heart disease?
Do you have numbness in your hands and/or feet?
Do you have trouble getting and maintaining an erection?
Do you have symptoms of diabetes (see below)?
Signs & Symptoms of Diabetes Include:
  • Unusual thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Extreme fatigue or lack of energy
  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent or recurring infections
  • Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
